I’m a Skype believer from its humble beginnings. It is a great communication tool and since we have access to high bandwidth, its quality now equals the plain old telephone system. I even bought the unlimited Canada/US plan to call landline phone numbers without paying extra. I save a lot on my cellphone bill. But, I want to use it more often. What’s stopping me? Well, I have only 20 contacts on it. That’s why!
Why would I have only 20 Skype contacts? Well the Skype address book hasn’t evolved that much since the beginning. We have to find each one of our contacts by full name or username. Altought, there is a function in the Windows version of the product to import a Yahoo Mail address book, I’m stuck with the limited Linux version that doesn’t do that.
The Skype website has a very modern and sleek look of the times. But, nowhere on the website you can search and add your friends from Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Gmail or Hotmail. For sure a big website, I don’t understand at all why Skype doesn’t offer such a basic functionality. You only find payment options on the website.
It would be obvious to offer a contact list management feature directly on the website that connects to other social networks. It would increase use of their service drastically. When you have someone to call, it’s a great starting point!
If you agree with my suggestion, please share it as much as possible to attract Skype’s attention. Thanks!
PS – I usually write posts in French in this blog, but I’m hoping someone is monitoring Skype’s brand and see this.
